One Direction say their sound may surprise a few people

ONE Direction have hinted that their debut album will NOT be typical boyband fodder.

The teenagers have just finished The X Factor Live tour and are taking a break before they return to the studio to finish off their first record, which is due to come out in time for this year's show.

The boys - Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan - are surrounded by screaming girls wherever they go and are fast becoming Britain's answer to Biebermania.

They haven't released a song yet but have promised that their style may surprise fans.

Louis revealed: "It's going to be less obvious than people might think. It's not going to be a complete boyband sound because I don't reckon that's what we're about.

"We don't want to look back on it and think we could have done better. But I can promise we're going to work as hard as we can."

Liam added: "There may be a bit of expectation with us and people might think we're going to bring out a certain type of record.

"But, at the moment, we're just trying to surprise people."

The boys auditioned as soloists for last year's X Factor but were put together as a group then mentored by Simon Cowell.

There were reports that they were feeling a bit put-out because Simon has been too busy to give them much attention - but the boys were quick to quash these rumours.

Louis said: "I think that was taken a bit out of context. We didn't really put it like that.

"We were just saying he's a very busy man at the moment and obviously the show launch in the US is going to be absolutely huge.

"But he speaks to us whenever he gets the chance and that's good enough for us."

Harry added: "Simon's a perfectionist and everything goes through him. His input is in everything we do because he wants it to be the best."

Zayn added: "He's the big man."

X Factor judge Louis Walsh likened the band to The Beatles and One Direction have experienced their fair share of Beatlemania-style fandom since - with screaming girls welcoming them to venues across the country on The X Factor Live tour.

The only other act who gets this kind of attention is Justin Bieber.

The boys have met the Canadian "briefly" but want the chance to meet him properly.

Harry joked: "We could get some of those Sumo suits and have a wrestling thing."
