It’s been a year to the day since One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” got it’s first public airplay.

On the 10th of August 2011 Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson appeared on BBC Radio 1 and were interviewed as their first ever single was played for fans.

It was the first release from their debut studio album ‘Up All Night’ and peaked at number one on the UK Singles Chart, after setting a Sony Music Entertainment pre-order record and selling 153,965 copies in its first week. The single also topped the Irish and Scottish Singles Charts, and reached the top ten on the Australian and New Zealand Singles Charts, Flemish Ultratop 50, Canadian Hot 100, Japan Hot 100 and the United States Billboard Hot 100.

In America the single became the highest Billboard Hot 100 debut for a UK act since 1998, when it debuted at number twenty-eight in February 2012. It peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. Selling over five million copies worldwide, it is among the best-selling singles of all time.

Phew! It’s been a busy year for the lads….and that’s just one song!

Fans celebrated the anniversary of the track online today and at one point ‘Happy Birthday WMYB’ was trending worldwide on Twitter.

The campaign was enough to get Niall Horan’s attention and he tweeted:

‘Just found out today is WMYB’s birthday. Happy birthday! Thanks for doing all the hard work with the track! Was incredible’

The Irish star also did his first blog of the month on the band’s official website and thanked fans for helping them achieve their dreams, writing:

‘also guys…thank you soo much…as some of you may know..we now have 12 millions record sales worldwide..and its all down to you guys..
you mean soo much to us..and all your hard work is amazing..so thank you all soo much!’
