In what has become a familiar scene for “X Factor” U.K. boy band One Direction, the group had to take safety precautions to avoid getting mobbed by hundreds fans who were waiting for One Direction at an airport. This time, it was at Tampa International Airport in Florida on September 1, 2012. One Direction took a private plane. Meanwhile, One Direction is kicking off the group’s publicity blitz for One Direction’s second album, “Take Me Home,” with an return appearance on Channel 4′s“Alan Carr: Chatty Man” on September 14, 2012.
One Direction’s Niall Horan, 18, tweeted about the expected mob scene in Tampa: “Guys we’re sorry we cannot come through the main terminal of the airport, the police are not allowing it for safety! Love u.”
Tampa International Airport also tweeted this warning: “@onedirection will be at Tampa international airport in 28 min but they won’t be meeting fans or taking pix with them.”
One Direction was in Tampa for a connecting flight to Los Angeles, where the group will be doing several promotional appearances, including performing at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards at the Staples Center on September 6, 2012. One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” is nominated for two awards at the show: Best Pop Video and Best New Artist. Winners are chosen by voting at MTV.com. As previously reported, One Direction will get full VIP treatment at the show.
There’s no word yet on what Los Angeles International Airport is doing for security in anticipation of One Direction’s arrival at approximately 8:30 p.m. Pacific Time. However, Los Angeles International Airport is a much bigger airport where celebrities often come and go. The airport also has more accommodations to deal with famous people who use private planes to avoid the general public.
After One Direction left Tampa, Tampa International Airport tweeted: “A lot of @FlyTPA passengers got schooled on @onedirection today. Serious fans!”
“Get ready @LAX_Official. You’re next for the @onedirection madness!”
One Direction’s Harry Styles, 18, might need to get plenty of sleep on the plane flights because once again he had a late night out partying. He was seen in the early-morning hours of September 1 at the Rose Club in London, where he was with his best friend Nick Grimshaw, 28, who was DJ’ing at the club that night. Also at the club that night were “X Factor” U.K. judge Tulisa Contostavlos, Leigh Francis, Kleo Rocos, Emma Bunton and JLS members Aston Merrygold and Marvin Humes.
TAMPA — It took more than two hours for Tampa International Airport officials to convince One Direction fans that the band wouldn’t be making an appearance in the main terminal Saturday.
Rumors spread quickly on Twitter that the boy band would have a two-hour layover in Tampa on its way to Los Angeles for the MTV Video Music Awards. More than 200 fans formed a welcoming committee that clogged the main gate area and forced airport police to put up stanchions to control the crowd.
The band did touch down at 5:45 p.m. at TIA on one of British Airways’ daily nonstop flights to Tampa, said Janet Zink, an airport spokeswoman. But the band went through customs and took a van to Landmark General Aviation near International Plaza mall to board a private jet.
Still, fans crowded in front of the entrance to the F gates hoping for a glimpse. Zink said employees announced the band wasn’t coming to the main terminal over the intercom every five minutes. She also took to Twitter (@flyTPA) to communicate with fans for two hours.
“This was a much larger crowd challenge than the Republican National Convention,” Zink said.
One Direction’s private charter flight left just before 7 p.m. A little while later, disappointed fans cleared out.
Zink tweeted a warning to her colleagues: “Get ready @LAX_Official. You’re next for the @onedirection madness!”
